Do you have a plan for times when the power goes out? Most times, should one lose power, it’ll be back on in a matter of minutes or hours. But, what if severe weather or other circumstances lead to a power loss that’s several days or weeks? Here are some thoughts on preparing for such outages.

1.  What to do before a power outage:

Make sure your emergency kit is fully stocked and ready, including a flashlight, extra batteries, cash (ATMs won’t work without power), and alternate phone charging options. Make sure to keep your car’s gas tank full, since gas stations rely on electricity to power pumps. If you have any battery-powered or electric-dependent medical devices, then make sure you have a back-up plan to keep these items operating.

2.  What to do during a power outage:

Use flashlights instead of candles. Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Take steps to remain cool or warm, depending on weather, if needed. If you’re considering using a generator, contact a professional to make sure it is used and installed properly.

3.  What to do after a power outage:

Throw away food that has been left at more than 40 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 2 hours (when in doubt, throw it out). Restock your emergency kit.
