The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) of the City of Cape Girardeau invites everyone to their 2016 Historic Preservation Walking Tour exploring a portion of the Boulevard Local Historic District this Friday, May 13 at 5:30 p.m., starting at 1304 Broadway (the “Spradling House,” owned by R. Hetzel Properties LLC.). The tour has been held annually, in recent years, to honor Cape Girardeau’s unique history and charm during Historic Preservation Month.

The Boulevard Local Historic District encompasses areas and structures north of Broadway, east of West End Boulevard, west of Henderson Avenue, the 300 block of North Park Avenue, and properties on both sides of Highland Drive, Hillcrest Drive, and Rockwood Drive. The district was added to the local historic landmarks register in Cape Girardeau in September 2009.

According to the HPC, the Boulevard Local Historic District is architecturally significant as an excellent example of an early twentieth century neighborhood housing Cape Girardeau’s expanding middle class from that time period through the present day.

The District currently retains its character as a distinctive neighborhood comprised of homes built in a variety of early twentieth century architectural styles. The predominant styles represented in this neighborhood include Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, Dutch Colonial, Neoclassical Revival, Minimal Traditional, and Ranch. Other early twentieth century American styles represented in this neighborhood are the Craftsman Bungalow style and the American Foursquare.
